IS OUR SHEA BUTTER FAIR TRADE?

Yes, we purchase fair-trade certified shea butter directly from cooperatives of women producers in Burkina Faso and Ghana. Since 2009, our shea butter supply chain has been 100% fair-trade certified (Fair trade Ecocert certification), ensuring a fair-price and shared value for the women. We helped them by covering the costs of the certification and by providing technical support thanks to our dedicated team locally.

IS OUR SHEA BUTTER ORGANIC?

Yes, we purchase organic shea butter directly from cooperatives of women producers in Burkina Faso and more recently in Ghana. The organic certification, our Sustainable Picking Charter, signed by the five cooperatives we work with and our local team daily work ensures that the Shea trees are looked after naturally, without any chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals, thus protecting biodiversity.

Protection from the Elements

Shea trees dot the landscape in Burkina Faso, where hot winds blow sand and dust daily across the Savannah. To protect their skin from the harsh conditions, women have used shea butter for generations. Organized into cooperatives, they use traditional methods to harvest and extract the butter.

Olivier Baussan, founder of L’OCCITANE.
